Afitos Chalkidiki

Afitos or Athitos is a traditional village, located in Kassandra, Halkidiki, just 83 km away from Thessaloniki. The village is built on a hill above the coast and overlooks the Toroneos Gulf. The architecture of the houses is characteristic as almost all the houses of the settlement are built with stone. All the above contribute so that one can find in Afitos the perfect balance between the natural landscape and the particular elements of the village. The history of the village goes back to 3000 BC as settlements with characteristics of that period have been found. Afitos developed as a member of the Athenian Alliance. In 348 BC it was completely destroyed by Philip II and has not been inhabited since. During the Roman Empire it experienced another great development mainly due to the monument of Ammon Zeus. The visitor also has the opportunity to admire the unique architectural church of Agios Dimitrios built in 1859 and located in the central square of the village, mansion houses and famous sculptures by Vassilis Pavlis. In the center of the village you will find the folklore museum which hosts various exhibitions of artists.

If you find yourself in Afitos on August 15, don’t miss the Panagia Festival, a traditional celebration with Greek music, dancing and food. However, throughout July and August there are artistic events taking place as part of the Afitos Festival. The sandy beach of Afitos stretches over a long length.
